“Burrup Peninsula begins world heritage status process”

Summary: The Burrup Peninsula in the Pilbara could soon be given world heritage status after traditional owners agreed to begin the process.
The site is home to one of the largest collections of ancient Indigenous rock art in the world.
Traditional owners have been divided over heritage listing due to concerns they could lose control of their land,but the new head of the Murujuga Aboriginal Corporation, Peter Jeffries, says there is now agreement.
‘We have had the discussion in internally with our Circle of Elders. We have approval from the Circle of Elders actually to go down the path World Heritage Listing.’
