In the past year eleven incidents were reported to authorities. Two of these are being formally investigated by the Department of Mines and Petroleum. One incident involved the escape of 14 tonnes of toxic ammonia gas from the plant in March, and the second one occurred in early June, when an undisclosed amount of ammonia gas escaped again. As media informed some months ago, workers had to be taken to hospital in some cases.
Victoria Laurie reports that “according to an Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) report into the plant, it is expected to have no ammonia emissions.”
MP Robin Chapple is alarmed by the number of incidents reported.
